Spooky DIY Halloween Mantel Ideas

Once you’ve decorated your front porch for Halloween, moving indoors to the fireplace mantel, or a curio table or bookshelf is often the next step for Halloween decorating. Shavonda Gardner of SG Style created a fun, only slightly spooky display, with lots of great Halloween mantel ideas.

This is part of our Halloween Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog. We sent Shavonda a mystery box of Home Depot Halloween decorations, and then stepped back to let her work her Halloween magic.

We love how she used skulls and spiders to make it a little creepy… but not enough to scare the little ones in her home. Also, check out her DIY way to create an antique effect on an ordinary mirror, which adds so much to her Halloween display.

When it comes to Halloween, we are truly a house divided. Half of us love it, and the other half really don’t, so when I was invited to participate in the Halloween Style Challenge, I knew it would be a challenge indeed. We love passing out candy to the neighborhood kids, but we typically don’t decorate beyond our family jack-o-lanterns on the porch and the occasional spider web swag! I was nervous, yet excited to take on the task of bringing a little haunt into our little house.

Once I was assigned our mantel, I knew I wanted to keep things pretty classically spooky, so with the help of my mystery box goodies from The Home Depot, I decided on an array of spiders, skulls, flickering lights, and reapers with lots of candlelight tossed in for a touch of sparkle.

The mantel is the perfect place to dabble in festive holiday decorating. Its not a very large space, so you can play with introducing a look you wouldn’t usually go with with very low commitment. My little one gets easily frightened by the spooks of Halloween, so I kept things pretty kid-friendly with drapey cheesecloth crawling with velvet spiders. Of course, I had to toss in just a dash of creepy with an animated Grim Reaper and large illuminated skulls and a couple of skeleton hands candle holders.

DIY Faux Antique Mirror

I wanted to center everything around an old antique-looking mirror, so I decided to tackle an easy DIY version using inexpensive mirror tiles, spray paint, and water.

I started by laying out the mirror tiles on a large canvas drop cloth and spraying each tile with water, making sure the water forms small pools.

I then gave each tile two quick sprays with flat black spray paint.

After spraying each tile, I softly wiped away the water and let them dry.

Next, I attached the tiles to a piece of MDF I had cut in The Home Depot’s lumber department with Liquid Nails. You can also use mirror mastic for this.

Finally I framed out the mirror with simple trim, and voila!

I’m happy with the result, and the non-Halloween lovin’ family members are too!

Happy Halloween everyone.
