It’s been a year or so since Brittany of brittanyMakes turned her small patio into a wonderful place for outdoor entertaining. The gorgeous painted floor was a big hit, and the patio has been the site of many a get-together with friends.
Brittany has a report on how the painted concrete floor is holding up. She also describes some of the tweaks she’s made along the way to make her patio even better. Check out the new photos of her now s’mores-ready patio, and read on for more small patio ideas you can apply to your own outdoor space.
I’m not gonna lie, my family, friends and I– we’ll take any excuse for a good hang out sesh. From BBQs to s’more parties, we like to have a good time!
Last year, The Home Depot encouraged us to spruce up our patio spaces, and you may recall our bold yet elegant BBQ soiree, which was the patio transformation of a life time if you ask me.
So, how has our patio fared over the last year? Some of you may be curious how the stenciled concrete has held up, or how we protected our patio set from the elements, or whether or not we actually made any improvements at all?
Our Hampton Bay Woodbury dining set has held up spectacularly! We had the set covered during the winter, but all spring, summer and fall, our set was exposed to the hot California sun, and it still looks brand new. Additionally, I store the cushions in our garage and bring them out when we dine or entertain outdoors. There’s no sense in risking mildewy cushions when our garage is feet from our patio space.
As far as the stenciled concrete goes, we didn’t seal the concrete last year because we wanted the option to remove the paint if we ever sold the house. That being said, in addition to scrubbing the patio clean every now and again, we had to touch up a couple of the white hexagons as the paint chipped in the areas where water drains. It’s something to consider when stenciling concrete floors, however I am impressed with how easily the white paint cleans up.
Once we touched up the edges of a few of the hexagons, you couldn’t tell which was freshly painted and which were painted a year ago, which I think is nice to know that Behr’s white porch & patio paint doesn’t stain easily.
Something else you may know about me, I don’t have the greenest of thumbs. I tend to keep our plants and foliage at a manageable minimum.
I fell in love with these square black ceramic planters while browsing the garden section at my local Home Depot. I grabbed two of them and paired them with adorable boxwood trees. I flanked these on both the sides of our patio door.
What else is new to our patio space? Well, this year we added a very important toy to our patio space, something that has turned our outdoor eating arrangement into a full on summer hangout spot. All we’re missing is the beachfront!
Enter: the sleekest, simplest, most modern and functional fire pit you’ve ever met. This HotSpot Solid Base Revolver Fire Pit also doubles as a center/side table with a gorgeous wood top.
Not only is this fire pit handsome, it is a true space saver. In our modest patio space, we were able to comfortably surround the fire pit with our dining set and three side stools with space to spare!
Now tell me, what would you do with a fire pit on the first official weekend of summer? Host a s’more party!
We grabbed some firewood, invited our friends over, and got to roasting those ‘mallows.
As you can see, s’more parties are a good time. Our boys were competing on who could roast the most perfect marshmallow. I’ve spared you the horrific picture of the ‘mallow on fire :P
Another addition to our patio is the Hampton Bay Teak Umbrella. We went without an umbrella last summer and realized we needed one after spending a few hot days outdoors without shade over our dining table. Patio umbrellas really make all the difference in enjoying your outdoor space on a hot summer day.
All in all, we were so happy with our patio last year, we only made a few improvements to shake things up design and function wise.
We added the fire pit area for casual gatherings and increased the comfort of our dining space by adding an umbrella.
After a year of stenciled concrete floors, I do not regret painting the floors one bit. Every time we invite new friends over they’re very impressed with the look of our outdoor space. Our patio is a retreat, a party spot, a dining space, and a place to mix and mingle with friends and family.
We’re so pleased to have transformed our once drab concrete slab into a very happy place.
Now it’s your turn to host a s’more party!
