When it comes to decluttering the home, the garage often becomes the last-ditch place for all the stuff we don’t want to throw out, but have no other place to store. And, let’s face it, it’s also usually the last space in the home that gets the attention it needs for some effective storage and organization solutions. The good news is, garages offer a lot of options for storage that other parts of the house don’t. Overhead garage storage might be the best of these solutions.

That was the topic of a short article by The Home Depot’s Eileen Claar on our online How-To Community Forums. She’s a long-time Home Depot associate who really knows her stuff when it comes to organization and storage ideas. Overhead garage storage frees up so much space on the floor of your garage that it’s almost like increasing the square footage of the area. It’s a very cost-effective storage solution, too. It almost seems like every garage should have overhead storage.

In her article Overhead Garage Storage, Eileen has a lot of good things to say about the HyLoft Ceiling-Mounted Storage Unit. These sturdy overhead shelves can hold up to 250 pounds when they’re properly mounted. Installation is easy, too, even if you’re installing them alone. The units can be combined to create longer overhead shelves along a wall, as we see in the image above.

Installation requires only a few tools:

“When installing in the garage, make sure the garage door can fully open before installing the storage units,” Eileen advises. “If installing above an open garage door, allow at least 17 inches of open space between the highest point of the door (as measured along its upward travel) and the ceiling.” She also recommends that you check all connections at least once per year to ensure that they remain tightly fastened.

Of course, we have many other storage solutions to help you bring some order to your garage. Check out the Garage Storage section of our Storage and Organization department online.
