Outdoor Decorating Ideas: Vertical Gardens and Hanging Gardens

Including vertical gardens into the patio decor is a trend we noticed, along with hanging gardens, in the recent additions to our Patio Style Challenge series. The design and DIY bloggers who took part in the Style Challenge came up with some very clever and attractive ways to incorporate vertical gardens into their outdoor spaces. Here’s a round up of these terrific outdoor decorating ideas.

Above, Atlanta-based blogger, Stephanie, of Glitter & Goat Cheese repurposed a large picture frame under her new pergola. Stephanie used the frame to hang five terra cotta pots, planted with bright vines and ferns. Plus, the ombre pots make it a two-trends-in-one project!

Interior designer and blogger, Kristin, of The Hunted Interior, took a more rounded approach (pun intended!) to her hanging garden design. Kristin used a chunky twine to hang these boxwood balls from tree branches above her gorgeous DIY floating deck. We’re loving the combination of bright green with black and white stripes!

Amber, crafter-extraordinaire of the DIY blog Damask Love, offered up another two-in-one DIY treat: a hanging herb garden with a chalkboard background! Talk about fresh to order! Amber can host guests on her tiny Miami balcony and simultaneously include fresh herbs in drinks and on the grill.

Jen, the author behind the popular DIY and home decor blog With Heart, brought the hanging trend to life with two wood shelves. It’s like “shelving” look, but drilled holes for each container to sit in is a neat twist. Plus, it’s an easy switch if you need to plant a fresh crop!

DIY blogger Ashley, of Sugar & Cloth, opted for the ladder look with a random assortment of succulents hanging on the rungs. The ladder is a great use of vertical space in Ashley’s small, urban backyard. Just think of all the uses for this super customizable idea! You could hang containers in the shape of a letter for a party, create a neat zig-zag pattern with different colored flowers, or just keep it natural with a random assortment.

Lindsay Jackman, who pens home decor blog The White Buffalo Styling Co., hung individual containers from her new pergola with these retro macrame hangers. The macrame look flows perfectly with Lindsay’s bohemian style backyard makeover.

Interior designer and A Creative Day blogger, Eileen, re-worked a shower rod system for her hanging herb garden! Eileen even added little chalkboard labels to her pots so she could switch them out easily.

Shavonda Gardner, DIY and blogger at A Home Full of Color, created her own vertical structure and DIY, colorful macrame hangers. Shavonda’s renter-friendly patio is covered in greenery and plant life (we love it!) but this hanging garden is a neat centerpiece. The planter and lattice combination can serve as a room divider or a privacy screen.

Home decor blogger Gloribell Lebron, of I Don’t Know How She Does It, came up with a unique use for the traditional envelope style mailbox – she planted succulents in it! The thin profile of the steel mailbox is a great solution for any small space like Gloribell’s urban balcony.

Lesley Graham, Atlanta-based blogger of her eponymous blog Lesley W Graham, used a simple can of spray paint to make her vertical garden pop. Planted with lavender and rosemary this vertical garden creates a wonderful scent across the whole modern farmhouse deck.
