In our Style Challenge series, we ask some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.
Erin Souder is the creative mind behind the home décor blog House of Earnest. She styled a gorgeous table setting for our Holiday Style Challenge, and she’s back with simple and effective patio décor ideas in the Patio Style Challenge. She shows us how flagstones and the right outdoor seating set are a great start to an awesome natural and rustic patio makeover. Add a fire pit and a few strings of lights, and you have an absolutely gorgeous outdoor space.
There is nothing that I love more than spending time outside relaxing with friends. My husband Matt and I knew that having an amazing patio meant that we had to completely renovate, and so we set out this spring to demo the cement slab that existed in our backyard and replace it with something ten times better. I wrote on my blog, House of Earnest, about my plans for my patio. It was natural and maybe a little European café-inspired (hey, a girl can dream!).
In our 100+ year-old farmhouse, something as contemporary as pavers wouldn’t quite do the trick, so we went with the natural look of flagstone. I also felt that the flagstone would give our backyard a little more of that old-world flair that I was after.
It took four long weekends to complete and we still haven’t even tackled the landscaping. I loved the look of the stone and was itching to get the new Hampton Bay Millstone seating set arranged onto the new patio and to have friends over to help me enjoy it.
The classic look of the set went perfectly with the very natural look of the flagstone patio and was enough seating for everyone. A few planters filled with boxwood and lavender stayed with the chic garden aesthetic and helped to soften all of the stone.
I was a tinsy bit worried that with the uneven nature of the flagstone the furniture would be uneven, but was so happy to discover that there were stabilizing feet on the bottom of the pieces – Whew! I love the new space we built and the times we’ve already spent in this beautiful space more than make up for the back-breaking work.
I can’t wait to get the rest of the landscaping done (maybe some wildflowers?) to help contribute to the overall look I was after.
I cannot be more happy with the Millstone set and know that this summer with the help of the sunshine and some good friends, this will be a summer that I won’t forget.
