Home Depot associates face the same challenges keeping a storage shed or garage organized and tidy that you do at home. The associates who help run our online How-To Community Forums have a storage shed where they keep some of the tools and supplies they use to create various how-to projects you see here on the Apron blog, Home Depot Style Guide and the Forums. It had finally reached a point where organizing the shed was the project they needed to focus on most.
And luckily for us, they documented the shed clean-up project, and shared with us what they learned about how to organize a shed.
They break it down into a few steps.
Have an idea of:
- What items you have to store
- What space is available
- How you want things organized
- What is used frequently or seldom
That last point might be the key. If the item is something you’ll reach for often, then put it in a place that’s easy to get to. Right?
You’ll need to clean out your shed or garage, of course. That means taking everything out. Not only do you need to see what space is available, you’ll also end up tossing out all sorts of items, which will make the whole process of organizing more effective. And, as they point out, this is your chance to sort your storage shed items into categories. That will make them easier to put back into the shed.
Organizing your shed or garage:
- Prevents repurchase of items and materials you already have
- Makes finding items that much quicker
- Means you’re getting the maximum usage out of the available space
Shovels, brooms, rakes, and other long-handle tools are all items we use often, so Chris and Kevin made sure those were placed in easy reach. They mounted a Smart Rack system on the wall, which makes for a great easy-access solution.
They used Handy Hooks for the extension cords and hoses to keep them neatly coiled and out of the way. Lining the back wall of the shed with pegboard made it easy for them to hang smaller tools like trowels, hammers, and drills — all within reach. This also made the workbench in the rear of the shed much more useful.
Of course, The Home Depot has everything you need to organize your shed or garage, but for goodness sake, don’t stop there! Organize your closets, too. Tame your laundry room and your kitchen. The Home Depot can help you organize just about anything.
