How To Update Curb Appeal for Fall

Article Posted By: Home Depot Staff

Fall is the perfect time to update your home’s curb appeal. You can easily condition your soil, add trees and shrubs and do lawn maintenance.

To transition your lawn into fall and prep it for spring you will want to start by clearing the leaves off of your lawn. Leaves do not insulate your lawn and can actually damage your grass. Keeping the grass covered inhibits sunlight from reaching the blades. Also, you will want to feed your lawn with fertilizer in early September. This will allow your lawn to begin repairing roots that were damaged in the hotter months. Each type of grass needs a different set of nutrients, so be sure to ask an associate what works best for your grass type. If you don’t know what type of grass you have, just bring a few blades with you for identification.

Your garden also needs some maintenance. Fall is a great time to remove the summer annuals and condition the soil. Adding a layer of mulch will help feed the soil and keep it at an even temperature. This helps any perennial plants you have trying to make it through the winter.

A great fall plant to add to your garden is chrysanthemums. These flowers come in perennial varieties or annual varieties that will last until the first frost. They work in the garden or container and come in many different colors.

Fall is also the best time to plant a shrub or tree. The cooler weather allows trees and shrubs to take root and begin getting acclimated to the climate. When planting, be sure to know a tree or shrubs maximum height and spread. This will keep you from having to transplant because they were planted too close together.
