In our Style Challenge series, we challenge some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point.

Bryn Dunn of the blog Bryn Alexandra took part in the Holiday Edition of the Style Challenge by creating a gorgeous fireplace mantel using a delightfully unexpected color palette of red and purple. Take a look at Bryn’s wonderful holiday mantel ideas.

The holidays are my absolute favorite time of the year! I love everything about it — the festive music, the wonderful smells, the hustle and bustle of shoppers and, of course, time with family. One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is to light a fire in our family room at night while my husband and I are relaxing on the sofa. And what better way to enjoy a fire during the holiday season than with a festive mantel?

When I start planning my decorations for the holidays, I always start with a color scheme. I like to pick only one or two colors to keep things simple and contemporary. (I am very simplistic with my decorating.)

This year I was inspired by a red and purple color scheme. Red is such a classic holiday color and I never tire of it this time of year. I decided to add purple as an accent color to give the mantel a modern touch. (Purple has been one of my favorite colors this year!)

For my mantel, I started with the Martha Stewart Woodlands Poinsettia Garland. The 17-foot garland was a bit too long for my mantel, so I folded the bottom of the garland up and tied it together. I wrapped the garland in red and white Christmas lights and used Command hooks to hook the garland onto my fireplace.

I thought it would be pretty to do a poinsettia floral arrangement for the center of my mantel, so I cut the poinsettia flowers off of the garland. Then, I arranged them all together along with four pretty Martha Stewart glittered decorative picks (two on each side). It created a beautiful poinsettia bouquet for a center focal point. I especially love the glitter centers on the poinsettia flowers. It’s all about the details.

I used a multi pack of purple ornaments for my purple accent color. I arranged them with more ornaments clustered toward the center.

One of my favorite parts of my holiday mantel is the glittered red wreath hanging in front of my mirror. I love this wreath because it’s simple and contemporary with just berries and twig but it’s also very pretty, too, thanks to the glitter! It lights up with red lights, which I love. I hung it simply with ivory ribbon.

Last but not least, I hung from the top of my fireplace these poinsettia ornaments along with the same purple ornaments I placed in the garland. I used red and purple ribbon, contrasting from the color of the ornament.

I had so much fun mixing traditional holiday pieces like red poinsettias and garland with more contemporary pieces like the red berry wreath and ornaments hanging from ribbon. For me, decorating is all about mixing old and new styles and my holiday mantel is no exception!
