A Glam Rustic Look for a Holiday Dinner Party

This holiday dinner party decor is a lovely mix of organic and rough combined with glittery and glam. Ginnie Leeming of Hello Little Home styled it for our Holiday Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog.

Take a look at how burlap, canvas, a chalkboard and a shiny Christmas wreath can come together in such a festive way.

Holiday Dinner Party Decorating Ideas

When The Home Depot asked me to decorate a dining room for Christmas, I was very excited … and a little nervous. You see, I live in a tiny NYC apartment with no room for a formal dining room. I love entertaining though, so it was time to get creative for my holiday dinner party.

The Holiday Place Settings

Since I didn’t have a dining table, I decided to use my kitchen cart. I covered the cart with a drop cloth that I trimmed to size. It was an easy and affordable way to create a tablecloth, and canvas fabric set the tone for the rustic glam look I was going for.

Small gifts wrapped in gold glitter paper and pretty plaid ribbon were the stars of my place setting. Instead of placecards, I decorated small gift tags with gold washi tape and stickers with the guests’ initials.

Who wouldn’t love to open a glittery gift when they sit down to dinner?

Burlap Place Mats

For more of that rustic feel, I created placemats out of burlap.

To create your own, cut a piece of burlap to your desired size. Most placemats are about 12 x 18 in. or 14 x 20 in. Use another placemat as a guide, if that’s easier.

Pull out a couple strands of burlap from each edge of your place mats to create a small fringe.

The Dining Table Centerpiece

Because I was working with a small space, I kept the table’s centerpiece simple. I grouped a few flameless candles together, and then surrounded them with gold and silver glittered pinecones.

This easy and elegant centerpiece allowed the rest of the table to shine!

Blackboard and Wreath Holiday Art

My favorite part of the tablescape was definitely the Happy Holidays art. The Home Depot sent me this gorgeous wreath, and I couldn’t wait to show it off!

I started by trimming one end off a black chalkboard so it measured 24 x 27½ in.

Then I used a gold chalk marker to create a boarder, and I wrote Happy Holidays in the center using a white chalk marker.

Finally, I attached the wreath to the chalkboard with a Command Hook and added a little ribbon to the top of the wreath.

To hang the chalkboard, I attached a sawtooth hanger on the back of the board.

The whole thing was easy to make and added a stunning focal point to my tablescape.

The Buffet Decorated for Christmas

In another corner of my living room, I turned a console table into a buffet.

The Home Depot sent me this stunning garland, and I fell in love with it! The plaid ribbon inspired my place settings and the rustic pinecones and berries sent the tone for my whole design.

To show off the garland, I leaned two wood shutters against my table, then used more of those Command Hooks to hang the garland around it.

Next, I made a fun banner to dress up the shutters. I cut the letters out of mat board and used a glue stick to attach the same glitter paper that I used for my place settings. More tape was used to attach the letters to a piece of jute twine before hanging the banner on the shutters.

I chose “FA LA LA” for my message, but any holiday greeting or saying would work!

Cocoa and Sweets

I’m a dessert lover, so I covered my buffet in my favorite sweets. I found a vintage-looking jar and caddy set at The Home Depot, and I knew it would be perfect for a hot cocoa station.

The set had a beautiful weathered grey finish that I really liked, but I preferred gold to go with my design. So I sprayed the lids and caddy with a few light coats of Rust-Oleum Pure Gold Spray Paint. It was an easy fix to get the look I wanted! After the paint dried, I cut circles out of black card stock and used my white chalk marker to create labels for the lids.

I filled the jars with crushed mint candies, hot cocoa powder, and mini marshmallows.

To cover the table, I used another drop cloth, and I made a burlap table runner using the same process as I did for my place mats. I also picked out some beautiful gold scroll mugs for the cocoa.

At the other end of my table, I used a marble cake plate to hold mini chocolate cakes that I made using a bundtlette pan. I sprinkled the cakes with powdered sugar for a snowy effect. Don’t they look cute?

Everything came together beautifully for my holiday dinner party, and I enjoyed the challenge of creating a dining room in my little space.

I’m sensing a lot of entertaining will happen in my home this season, and I hope that I inspired you to make the most of your space—small or large as it may be—too!
