Katie-Gavigan-Halloween-Style-Challenge-1

Katie Gavigan of Katie Gavigan Interiors knows how to get the most out of just a few decor items, as you’ll see with her Halloween ideas.

This is her contribution to our Halloween and Harvest Style Challenge here on The Home Depot Blog. We sent her a few fall and Halloween decorations to get her started, and she did the rest.

Katie’s front porch and entryway are festive and fun, and all it took was a few good Halloween porch ideas.

Fresh Fall and Halloween Ideas

Welcome to our front porch, all cozified and festive for fall! When the kind friends at The Home Depot reached out about transforming a corner of our house for Halloween, I knew some extra creativity would be required. I’m not much for creepy or spooky, but do love to deck the halls for just about any occasion. It was a fun challenge to find opportunities to say “Halloween” in unusual ways!

My first challenge was the porch itself. Just like our back deck (which we worked on this past spring), the wood was faded and worn. I wanted to create a little spot that would really hold its own and stand out against the traditional exterior of our home’s façade.

Truth be told, I planned to paint it black, but after 2.5 coats of primer between the many nooks, corners and posts, I decided the white would do just fine for a season or two! It’s still the fresh, stark look I was going for with the black, just a little harder to keep clean. But that’s what I love about the creative process! Challenges lead to creative solutions; in this case…

The rugs! This is such a simple and satisfying DIY.

Wanting to incorporate plaid somewhere in this project, the light bulb came on while scouring inspiration images of DIY, painted rug patterns… paint a plaid pattern! Look out for an upcoming post with more detailed instructions, but it’s pretty basic with lots of room for flexibility in your pattern.

I love the classic plaid of the larger rug on the landing, and decided to break it up with more modern, plaid-inspired patterns on the smaller pieces. I feel like I got so much bang for my buck! We picked up this indoor/outdoor area rug at The Home Depot store (so affordable!!), and just cut to size as needed. I still have a decent amount left and may do something similar on our back deck stairs for an added layer of protection. This would also be a great DIY using the entire 6 x 8 size in a larger area.

Don’t you love it when a beginner-level DIY project makes you feel like the sky’s the limit with your creative options? You could seriously do a different design/theme for each season at this price! I’m happy that the plaid will easily roll into the holiday season and feel Christmas-sy. But for now, it’s all about fall!

Another goal for the space was to add some privacy or sense of separation from the neighbor’s porch, which is an arm’s reach from ours. Welcome to city life! Again, a challenge-turned-opportunity to flex those creative muscles. I decided on a simple trellis, and of course with modern lines to counter the uber-traditional architecture of the house. The juxtaposition of old + new is my language.

After measuring for the dimensions I wanted and a quick trip to The Home Depot for my lumber, all that was left was to paint and nail the pieces together. If I can do this, so can you! Seriously – I didn’t even use exact spacing with the horizontal pieces. Eyeballing is sometimes your friend, I promise!

More of the process is outlined here.

Eventually, I’d love to have vines climbing up the trellis, for even more of a cozy, private feel as you approach the front door. The beautiful plants are all from The Home Depot’s garden center (and that amazing gold lotus planter is in fact a wall sconce, recently sourced at a thrift store!). The planters are suspended with a combination of S-hooks and strong fishing line.

Loosely draped string lights (in any basket or vessel!) give a casual, inviting vibe, inside or out! (Seasonal-themed string lights…brilliant!)

Other than the pumpkins and orange & black lights, have you spotted the other Halloween touches?

Gold and purple Halloween spiders are making appearances on the porch steps, railing and other sneaky spots. They’re festive and whimsical but not too creepy! And fun anywhere in the house.

The spiders started out as black, in both plastic and fuzzy surfaces. With gold spray paint, you’ll find you get a better finish with the plastic variety. Shout-out to my mom who had the brilliant idea to paint some of them gold. Perfect!

Moving up to the next level, we have another painted rug as the welcome mat, a funky orange stripe inspired by one of my favorite fabric patterns. I wanted to bring in a little more orange, and like the classic-with-a-twist vibe, which coordinates without being too matchy.

The new hanging pendant light is courtesy of The Home Depot’s fantastic lighting selection. The previous light (which came with the house) basically got lost up in that little nook and the space was calling for an update! Love the clean lines and fresh feel of this one.

The projects represented here include a freshly-spray painted door, mail slot and the awesome juju hat knock-off! I’ll blog about this project soon, so stay tuned. Also, did you spot the little spider hanging out here? For a fresh take on the Halloween vibe, I say keep the holiday decorations to a minimum and combine with items you can use all season long. This way, it’s still a reflection of your style without feeling too theme-y.

We couldn’t let the party end when you walk in the door, so the entry was adorned with a bit of festivity as well.

How cute are these candy corn lights?! I’m all for cozy string lights, any time of the year!

And of course, more gold spiders, and a few spray painted gold pumpkins and gourds, just to round it out.

A few easy DIY’s and a little creativity went a long way in seriously upgrading our curb appeal! What a difference to be welcomed by this inviting scene when we come home. I hope you’re inspired to bring easy seasonal elements to your home, inside or out!
