Learning how to test your toilet for leaks sounds daunting, but it’s not. In fact, unless your toilet is leaking water onto the floor, you may not even realize something could be wrong. Unfortunately, many toilets have what’s called a ‘silent leak,’ or a leak that isn’t detected by a running water sound coming from a toilet not in use. Luckily, there’s an easy way to test your toilet for leaks – just head to the pantry for some food coloring.

Testing your toilet is an easy process. Just follow the instructions below.


Step 1

Food coloring in hand, take the tank lid off.

Step 2

Drop a little bit of food coloring into the reservoir.

Step 3

Replace the lid on the tank.

Step 4

Don’t flush the toilet for an hour, and if you see any hint of food coloring in the toilet bowl, on the sides of the toilet, or on the floor, you’ll know you have a leak.

That’s all it takes. Now you can test your toilet for leaks without anyone else’s help.
