Materials Needed

Step 1: Mark & Cut Wood for C H E E R

Using our CHEER_DIMENSIONS PDF as a guide, measure, mark and cut the 2-in. x 6-in. pine boards with a Circular saw. Each letter will be approximately 13-in. tall x 12-in. wide.

NOTE: When cutting wood, always clamp it down to a stable work surface. Wear safety glasses, ear plugs and work gloves as your tools require.

Step 2: Organize Wood As You Cut

Keep your boards organized for easy assembly. Lightly write the letter you’ll build with each board, and keep the boards for each letter grouped together.

Step 3: Build Each Letter

Using the PDF as a guide for how each letter is assembled, secure the boards together using a impact driver and 2½-in. coarse-thread drywall screws.

Step 4: Connect the Letters to Each Other

Once the individual letters are built, it’s time to connect them to one another.

We built them up, taking the time to stagger the letters just so that the shelf felt properly balanced.

Connect the letters to one another using the same screws and driver from Step 3.

Step 5: Fill Holes & Sand

Once the letters are attached to one another, it’s time to prepare for painting.

Using wood filler, putty up the holes, allow the putty to dry, then sand them smooth with an orbit sander (220-grit sandpaper).

Step 7: Add Extra Bracing

Once the paint is dry to the touch, add flat 5-in. T braces and 5-in flat corner (“L”) braces to the backs of the letters for extra reinforcement.

Step 8: Add L Bracket for Extra Security

It’s always a good idea to add a corner bracket in an inconspicuous spot where you can attach the sign directly to the wall and prevent anyone from accidentally tipping it over.
