DIY Bathroom Vanity Made From an Desk

This DIY bathroom vanity has a fun twist– it’s made from a repurposed desk. It’s surprisingly easy to make the conversion, too. Spruce up the desk with a new coat of paint, cut a hole for the sink, and you pretty have your bathroom vanity ready to install. We used a new desk with a cool mission-style look, but you could just as easily convert an old desk from a thrift store to create a vanity in whatever style suites your decor.

Here’s the step-by-step tutorial so you can create your own unique bathroom vanity.

Step 1

Find a well-ventilated area of your home, like a garage, to set up your work space. To protect surrounding items and flooring, spread the drop cloth in the area you will be working in.

Step 2

Place the desk on top of the drop cloth and begin to remove all existing hardware from the desk.

It will be easier to remove hardware if you remove the drawers first.

Step 3

Before we begin painting, we are going cut the desktop to allow for the sink to be placed.

The first thing you will need to do is measure the width and length of the desktop to locate the desktop center.

Lightly trace the lines from the tape measure with the pencil. Where the two lines meet, this is your center.

Mark the center using the pencil.

Step 4

Our sink came with a template for measuring purposes. Most sinks will have this template in the box.

Place the template onto the top of the desk, placing the center of the template onto the center you located.

Trace the template, per the template directions.

Step 5

Take the drill and create a pilot hole anywhere along the traced outline for the sink. This pilot hole will make it easier to insert and use the jigsaw tool in the next step.

Step 6

Now that you have your pilot hole drilled, it’s time to cut out the hole for the sink to go into.

Insert the jigsaw tool into the pilot hole and slowly follow the traced outline of the sink.

Step 7

Lightly sand the lower portions of the desk, there’s no need to sand the top, as it will not be painted. To properly sand, always sand in the direction of the wood grain.

Wipe the desk clean with tack cloth, removing all dust.

Step 8

Priming is an important step with any paint project, especially raw wood. Applying a primer will promote top coat adhesion.

First, shake the Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2x Primer for approximately one minute after the ball begins to rattle. Then apply the primer onto the entire surface in a steady back and forth pattern.

Hold the can approximately 10-16 inches from the surface to avoid drips and runs.

We flipped the desk over so the top was protected from any overspray. You can also tape off the top of the desk with painter’s tape.

Step 9

Once the primer has dried, you are ready to apply your base coat color.

Apply Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2x Gloss Ocean Mist onto the lower portion of the desk. We chose to leave the desk top unpainted.

Again, shake the can for approximately one minute after the ball begins to rattle. Then hold the can 10-16 inches from the surface and spray in a steady back-and-forth motion.

The base coat color will need to fully cure before we move onto our next step.

Allow the top coat to fully dry for at least 24 hours.

Place the vanity in place, install the faucet, and connect the plumbing.
