Decorating a Small Apartment for Christmas, by Lindsay B of everything LEB

Apartment dwellers often feel left out of the fun of decorating for Christmas. Sure, you might put up a small Christmas tree and perhaps string some lights on a wall. But what about decorating a small apartment for Christmas breakfast? Or hosting guests for a holiday dinner? That might seem a bit much to ask of an apartment kitchen.

Design blogger Lindsay B of everything LEB is here to show that even in a small apartment space, there are lots of ways to make a holiday meal something special.

Lindsay is one of the several DIY and design writers who agreed to take part in our Holiday Style Challenge. We sent each participant a mystery box of Home Depot Christmas decorations and let them come up with their own unique Christmas decorating ideas.

Lindsay B’s Christmas tablescape is cute and festive– perfect for entertaining guests or having Christmas pancakes in your jammies. And with the clever DIY tricks she shows us, it’s very doable, even on a budget.

Living in an apartment space is often at a premium. While I don’t have a dedicated dining room, I feel lucky there is enough room to put a small kitchen table in my kitchen. The table usually lives against the wall, but for certain occasions, like Christmas morning, I pull out the table leaves and set that baby up! Christmas is pretty special in my house; I like to make a REALLY big deal of it. So it’s only natural the day has to start out spectacular. With a little help from Home Depot this year, my Christmas morning is sure to be out of this world.

Welcome to my Christmas morning table!

I wanted to make it casual, yet something that I normally wouldn’t do everyday. I started with the tablecloth to set the scene, and I made it by dyeing a large drop cloth red. I love drop clothes because they are all cotton and take color like a breeze, perfect for making a custom inexpensive tablecloth.

The vintage William Shakespeare brass wall hanging used to hang in my grandparents’ kitchen, so its special to me and needed a little bling for Christmas morning. I wired together two Martha Stewart Winterberry garlands for a full wreath and hung it around the platter for a festive touch.  I think Mr. Shakespeare would approve.

Shatterproof blue ornaments were just the right size for place cards, but they were missing a personal touch. With a simple initial painted on ribbon it adds that personal touch that I’m so in love with. It also doubles as a party favor.  Who doesn’t love a party favor?

The metal chairs couldn’t be left alone, so I used some Behr sample pots and Martha Stewart craft paint in Golden Pearl (my FAVORITE) and quickly painted some shatterproof ornaments in my color scheme for the chair garland.

The Christmas table centerpiece happens to be my favorite. I just love amaryllis; they are the perfect Christmas flower.

By planning ahead a few weeks, come Christmas you can have blooms all over your house. To cover the dirt and add another festive touch I put in some small glass ornaments around the bulb tops.

No room in my house is complete at Christmas without tree in it, so of course the kitchen needed one too. This Christmas tree in an urn is the perfect addition. I love it because it can go on the floor or up on a table like I have it here. Bonus: it glows at night and is so pretty to eat dinner by!
