The new corner bench is the star of this patio. Gloria Lebron of I Don’t Know How She Does It! built it on her patio to give the space extra seating and a more welcoming environment. The flower planter that she included in the corner bench design certainly added to the appeal. Of course, the added corner bench seating also gives her more opportunities for her excellent patio decorating ideas.
This is Gloribel’s second Patio Style Challenge for The Home Depot Blog. Previously, she showed us how to make the most out of a very small apartment balcony, but now, she’s working with a larger outdoor design canvas in her new home.
A Corner Bench on a New Patio
The excitement of having a tomorrow comes from not knowing what it would bring. Last year right about this time, I was posting for the first time on The Home Depot Blog about our 8 x 3 ft. “urban garden area.” Little did we know that moving to a new home was in our future. We became first-time homeowners with a 50 x 50 ft. BACKYARD. Talk about super-sizing!!!
Although this outdoor space needed some TLC, we knew this house was about to become a home to the five of us. One of our main concerns was the patio because we wanted it to be a place not only for entertaining, but also for our daughters to run and have some fun.
Our Hampton Bay Fenton Patio Bistro Set, which we got from The Home Depot and from the previous Patio Style Challenge was good as new, but we needed to add more seating area for our friends and family. We’ve adapted the landing between our patio and home to be our festive gathering spot, and it was right here where we needed the additional seating.
Building the Corner Bench
With a couple of 2 x 4’s, we were able to construct a long corner bench (with some underneath space for baskets). We also added a big planter to bring some charm and extra color to our patio.
Flowers for the Bench Planter
In the planter, I mixed a couple of plants with small white flowers–Euphorbia and Pentas– that attracted butterflies (my daughters like to chase them around). I love the green in plants, so my selection was very minimalist when it came to colors. There’s diversity in form and heights, though, with Vinca and Lemon Grass.
The outcome was very impressive, and they blended very well with the rest of my patio décor.
I decorated the rest of my space using galvanized steel lanterns with a couple of LED battery operated candles.
I also added water-resistant pillows in bright green and blue colors. These blended very well with the bistro set green cushions while keeping a spring and summer look throughout.
I think this whole space now is ready to host some wonderful evening gatherings with friends and family in a more comfortable way.
Now, next on our “to do list”… a pergola. Wish me luck!
Gloribel has a tutorial on her blog for the hanging candle lanterns you see on her patio. Take a look.
