Decorating for Christmas: A Backyard Santa's Workshop

There might be no better inspiration for Christmas decorating than Santa’s workshop. And though we’ll likely never be entirely sure what this legendary work space looks like, holiday scholars agree that St. Nick almost certainly makes full use of the color red, likely with green trim in his workshop. That was the starting point for Melaine Thompson, author of My Sweet Savannah, when she decorated her backyard studio for Christmas.

Melaine took part in our ongoing Holiday Style Challenge series. We sent her, and several other talented stylists, mystery boxes of Home Depot Christmas decorations to see what sort Christmas decorating ideas the bloggers would come up with.

Melaine’s backyard studio is bursting with Christmas cheer. She makes full use of the traditional color scheme, and she added so many charming details. And even if you don’t have your own garden house, we think you’ll pick up plenty of inspiration for your front porch and for your indoor Christmas decorating.

When I was first asked to participate in the Home Depot Holiday Style Challenge, I was thrilled. I love any sort of challenge and creating a space with things that I did not pick out on my own would be a fun project. When the boxes started arriving, I was very excited. It truly was like Christmas morning.

I opened up the boxes and saw a lot of green and gold~lovely. Then I saw a ton of red. Shoot, as much as I love red, I can never make it work in my own home. However, in the end I was able to embrace the red, and now I think I love red, and it makes the space I created much more magical.

So, my assignment was this: To create an outdoor space using what The Home Depot sent me. I decided I wanted to do something a little less ordinary than your typical porch or front entryway.

The outdoor space I chose in the end was my studio in the back of our property. It seemed like a great little space to doll up for Christmas and it also doubles as a great place to wrap gifts.

As I started stringing lights in trees, I realized that it looked a lot like what I would imagine Santa’s workshop to look like. So here you have it, my version of Santa’s workshop!

I started with the exterior. I purchased two wooden window boxes and painted them to match the trim.

I was sent two mailbox swags, which fit perfectly in the window boxes. I simply added fresh cut greens from the yard to make it look fuller.

I also added some red ornaments here and there.

I also purchased two Blue Atlas cedar ornamental trees and added white LED lights to them.

I placed two pre-lit Christmas trees in my existing planters. They come with urns, but I wanted something bigger-scale for this space, so I removed them and will save the urns for another project.

I used the Winterberry Red Poinsettia Wreath, but I removed the poinsettias and added fresh greens, just like I did with the window boxes.

Two red Adirondack chairs finish the exterior.

I made signs out of 1 x 6 pine lumber for each of the chairs, one that says Mrs. Claus and the other Mr. Claus.

Decorating for Christmas: Rustic Lantern with LED Votive Candle

I got these two great lanterns and battery-operated candles with timers, from Home Decorators Collection. I think they look perfect of the steps and create a warm inviting glow at night.

Inside Santa’s workshop, I created a wrapping station, a little craft table and more DIY signs, all embellished with red mini bows and gold- and ivory-colored ribbon. I also hung red ribbon from the chandelier.

I added shatterproof ornaments for decoration and Paper White Narcissus flowers.

I wrapped a ton of fake presents and made a Merry Christmas sign using miscellaneous letters on a 1 x 12 piece of lumber trimmed out with 1 x 2’s, which I set on top of the storage cabinets in my studio/Santa’s workshop.

A toy truck and a our handsome dog Harley with his red bow finished things off nicely!

I hope you enjoyed my space I created.

It was a blast to do and I am so grateful to The Home Depot for including me in this Holiday Style Challenge.
