One of the best experiences in a new home is the first Christmas. That’s what Shavonda Gardner is getting ready to experience, so she’s giving extra attention to her Christmas decorating… and we get to see what’s she done.
Shavonda is the author of the popular decor blog A Home Full of Color, and she’s one of the very talented stylists taking part in our ongoing Holiday Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog. We send these very accomplished decorators mystery boxes of Home Depot Christmas decorations and ask the bloggers to turn those decorations into fabulous holiday decor. Along the way we pick up a few styling tips and a lot of Christmas decorating inspiration.
Shavonda’s home really is full of color– in this case, she’s created a gorgeous Christmas mantel in glorious shades of purple with silver accents. Take a look at her Christmas decor, which is rich and warm and so full of life.
The holiday season is my favorite time of year. The lights, the sounds, the smells, the decorations… I love it all. I was so ecstatic when I was invited to take part in this years Holiday Style Challenge, and even more so when I was assigned to deck out our mantel.
One of the first things I fell in love with about our new home was the fireplace. I could just imagine crisp fall and winter days and nights spent by the fire, as well as the sparkle and glow of festive holiday decor. I didn’t so much love its brass insert and unfinished façade, though, which you can see in the before and after shots above. I knew a little sprucing up was just what it needed to provide the perfect backdrop for a little holiday elegance.
After painting, adding some simple mouldings, nixing the brass door insert in favor of a fireplace screen, and adding a bit of classic beauty with Carrera subway tiles, the newly made-over fireplace was ready for some holiday cheer.
Of all the goodies that arrived in my mystery boxes, the thing that stood out to me the most were the purple ornaments. Every year we usually decorate with a different color for the holidays and purple happens to be my favorite. I loved the bold statement they made when paired with our deep teal walls. Playing off the new black and white fireplace, I wanted to create some drama and elegance using greenery, white lights and lots of candles.
I love the look of fresh fallen snow on trees, but living in California, we never see it. Adding a bit of snow spray to a trio of wreaths and potted Christmas trees provides the perfect wintery touch.
Happy Holidays, everyone! May your season be filled with warmth and a tad bit of drama (of the decorative kind)!
