Dining room decorating ideas from Kristin of The Hunted Interior

In our Style Challenge series, we challenge some of our favorite bloggers from around the web to surprise us with their ideas for creating a stylish and functional space using Home Depot products as a starting point. We were absolutely thrilled when Atlanta blogger Kristin Jackson of The Hunted Interior agreed to participate in our Holiday Style Challenge series.

Kristin’s challenge was to decorate her dining room for the holidays, and boy do we love the space she created! In addition to the great Christmas decorating ideas she has, Kristin lets us in on a clever way to create clusters of ornaments for a fresh way to display classic Christmas decorations. She also shows us how she modified a Home Depot candle with a striking snowy look.

Christmas has always been one of my favorite times of the year. Between family, friends, sweets & treats there is nothing that doesn’t excite me. In our home, the season is officially kicked off once the ornaments, garland & lights come out. So how thrilled was I, when this arrived on my doorstep…

A mystery box filled with Christmas decorations! What colors were they going to be? What theme would we have? It literally was like Christmas morning on a random Tuesday afternoon. Upon tearing open my boxes I discovered bright and shiny ornaments in all shades of turquoise, silver & royal blue, garland galore, remote control candles (yes fellas… I said remote control candles!) and a giant stack of wreaths.

Now it was time to get to work decking the halls … well technically, our newly revamped dining room.

Along with my ornaments I gathered some ribbon and a handful of zip ties (my holiday secret weapon) and began to cluster.

Clustering allows you to create one giant ornament to hang instead of individually hanging each one. It saves time on the install and breakdown and gives a very unique look that is otherwise difficult to achieve.

You simply slide as many ornaments as you want onto a ribbon, and once you have met your desired fullness, tie it into a knot. To attach your clusters to your tree, wreaths or garland, you simply insert a zip tie and pull it tight. After grouping multiple clusters together and adding a few fillers in between, I was able to transform our new mantel.

Chandeliers are also an easy and unexpected item in a dining room to dress for the holidays. We simply took a standard wreath, flipped it upside down and attached it to the arms of our chandelier using – you guessed it – zip ties! Adding a few simple bows and wrapping the chain with ornaments instantly gave the chandelier a new look.

Wanting to tie in the wreaths, I again grouped multiple ornaments for a larger impact. This time, though, individually tying each ornament on a separate ribbon and gathering all the ribbons at the top.

We are fortunate enough to have friends and family within walking distance, and dessert on Christmas always happens at our house. I continued the clusters of ornaments onto the Dessert Table as well by filling some bowls and surrounding the bases of cake stands.

Utilizing our family’s silver as vessels for ornaments helps add that touch of glamour.

Adding that snowy look to the remote control candles was as easy as painting on a thin layer of white school glue & rolling them in Epsom Salt.

The grouping of all of the ornaments, the added touches of sparkle throughout the space, the natural feel of the greenery, all of these elements combine to create a magical dining room that we will be thrilled to celebrate in.
