Charcoal or Gas? That is the question!
Well, really the question these days is “Charcoal, gas, propane or infrared?” Various grilling equipment, techniques and tools vary wildly, but almost everyone has a personal preference or opinion on all of them.
For me personally, I love the flavor of a char-grilled burger but I also like the ease and speed of a gas grill. Regardless of your preference, the two things that we all have in common, though, is that almost everybody loves to cook out on a warm summer evening and that we all have our own opinions as to which grill is right for us.
With all of the different styles and features of today’s grills, choosing the perfect one can be a confusing process. The main question most people struggle with at first is “should I choose gas, infrared or charcoal?” Charcoal grills can reach extremely high temperatures that are perfect for searing, charring and smoking meats. But, some of my friends and neighbors don’t agree that charcoal is all that and they swear by their gas grills. I have to admit that some of their arguments are persuasive – easier to start, heats up faster, easier to clean up.
As you are getting ready to buy a new grill, take some time to figure out which grill is right for you. Here’s a list of questions to ask yourself:
- What type of grill best suits your needs?
- How often do you plan to use it?
- Is portability important? Where do you plan to store the grill?
- What types of food do you prepare most often?
- What special features and options would you like to have?
- What is the latest technology in grilling? How can I learn more?
For now, the great debate of gas versus charcoal (and now infrared) rages on, but I have to believe that there is room in this world for all of them.
Now I’m hungry (as usual). So while I go fire up the grill for dinner tonight, share which side of the grilling battle are you on and why!
