Black, White and Purple Glam Halloween Dining Room

Halloween can be spooky, cute, or as we increasingly see, glam. Shonee of Hawthorne & Main definitely went with glam when she decorated her Halloween dining room.

This is part of our ongoing Halloween Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog. We sent Shonee a mystery box of Halloween decorations, and let her apply her decorating talents to creating a fab Halloween decor with the contents and a little bit of DIY skill.

She came up with a fun, colorful Halloween dining room and mantel with lots of fun, not-so-spooky details.

A Glam Halloween Dining Room and Mantel

This year for my Halloween decor, I decided to go black and white with pops of purple glam.

Our house has a pretty open floor plan, which is rare for a home built in the 1950s. The open floor plan is what sold me on the house. Our kitchen, dining room, and family room all share the same space. It is great for entertaining! Let me show you around my Halloween dining room!

The table runner is made from one of my all time favorite fabrics, painter’s drop cloth. This fabric is canvas, and is a beautiful off-white color. You can find all sorts of sizes at The Home Depot for any project.

To make this table runner I simply cut out a piece of the drop cloth large enough to fit my table. I threw it in the wash and let the washing machine do all the work. Once it was washed, I tossed it into the dryer. When it was all dry I pulled it out and found that it was oh so nicely frayed along the edges. I did need to trim off the excess frayed fabric. The frayed edge adds some nice texture to my table.

These tombstones that are part of the table centerpiece are super cool. Not only do they make great decor pieces for my Halloween dining room, but they also come equipped with Bluetooth speakers…..say what!?

Yep!

You can stream scary music straight from your iPhone, or other Bluetooth device, to these speakers. What a great addition to any party! I added spider webs to make them a little bit more festive.

The skull-head napkin rings are also a DIY that I did. To make them, I took a 3-inch long piece of ¼-inch wide elastic and some hot glue. I glued each end of the elastic to the back of the skull. A super quick and fun napkin ring!

Real candles can be messy and a bit of a fire hazard with little fingers getting in the way. For moms and anyone else not wanting real flames, these LED candles are just the thing. These candles have the added flicker action which makes for the perfect Halloween mood. Plus, they are purple!

Next to the purple candles, you see a mercury glass skull that fits in so nicely with the black, white and purple color scheme for my Halloween dining room. The skull has an LED light inside, which produces a cool glow at night.

Our dining room has an old (I mean vintage) gas stove in it. It was in need of a makeover. It had gold accents that looked so bad. Don’t get me wrong, I like gold. It just looked so dated. The stove now looks updated, and the cost was just right! All I did was spray paint the gold trim using a flat black paint that is designed for high heat surfaces. You can see the full tutorial here.

Over the past couple of years I have started to decorate with nature more. I found these glass jars at a thrift store. They were perfect, plus there were two of them! I added river stones to the bottom and put some moss on top. I went out to the backyard and picked some branches to add inside the jar. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to add some extra special details!

The skull you see came in a bag of two skulls. He (she?) is life-sized and has a painted, bone-like finish… and a nice smile.

On the other side of the mantel, I used a creepy looking Edison-style pendant light. This light is great because it uses a regular plug. The bulb is made out of plastic so there is no need to fear that it will get broken. This light also has a flicker effect, which looks awesome!!

These purple LED tea light candles really make the mantel pop!! Such a great addition. I am so glad that I added them! I finished off the mantel by adding a couple of skulls to both sides.

Don’t you love the huge geometric art with the wire BOO! To make the wire BOO all I did was use some hobby wire and go around and around the letters about 10 times. I used some flat black spray paint to paint the letters black. I hung them using a single string of wire.

On the floor in from of the fireplace I added two spooky chalkboard headstones. These stones have motion sensors with sound and lights. What a great accent piece. Plus, did I mention chalkboard? Create a custom message for your guests!

The giant skull behind the amazing chalkboard headstone is huge!! I don’t think the pictures really demonstrate the size. This guy also has lights and motion sensor-triggered sound.

I built the side table that the head is sitting on using 2 x 2’s and a 2 x 12. You can find the side table tutorial over here.
